Get a G driver’s license: new drivers

In Ontario, if you are at least 16 years old, you can apply for a driver’s license. As a new driver, you will need to practice driving and gain experience over time. The process is a two-step process that typically takes around 20 months to finish. To start, you will get a G1 license, which marks the beginning of your journey toward obtaining a full G driver’s license.

During this time, it’s essential to learn and improve your driving skills to ensure that you are ready for the next step. By following the process, you will gain the necessary experience to become a confident and safe driver.

Driving in Ontario

To drive on the roads in Ontario, you must carry a valid driver’s license, which is a blue, plastic card displaying your name, address, date of birth, photo, and signature. The license also includes an expiry date, and you need to renew it before it expires. Along with your license, you must also have a valid owner’s permit, license plate, and insurance. It’s important to always obey traffic laws and drive safely to ensure the safety of yourself and others.

License types

In Ontario, there are 15 types of licenses, each one certifying you to drive a specific type of vehicle. To drive a car, van, or small truck, you will need a G-class license. Each license comes with certain conditions, and it’s essential to check the full list of licenses before applying. To apply for a driver’s license, you must be at least 16 years old, a resident of Ontario, and not a visitor. You will need to pass a vision test and a knowledge test that covers the rules of the road and traffic signs before you can get your G1 license. As a beginner driver, you must practice driving and gain experience over time to advance to the next stage.

Learning to drive: graduated licensing

After passing the vision test and knowledge test, you will receive a G1 license. To obtain your full G license, you must first complete two learning levels: G1 and G2, and pass two road tests. This process, known as graduated licensing, is designed to help new drivers practice and gain experience over time. You have up to five years to complete the process. If you do not get your full license within this time, you will need to start over.

While holding your G1 license, you must maintain a zero blood alcohol level (no alcohol) and ensure every passenger wears a seatbelt. You cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. or on 400-series highways and high-speed expressways like the 401, Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), or the Gardiner Expressway. When driving, you must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of experience and a blood alcohol level of less than .05 (or zero if they are 21 and under). The driver must be the only other person in the front seat. If you are with a driver instructor certified in Ontario, you can drive on any road. Most people practice with their G1 license for 12 months before taking the next step.

The G driving license is the full, unrestricted driver’s license in Ontario. It allows you to drive any vehicle without restrictions, unlike the G1 or G2 licenses.

To get a G driving license, you must first pass a vision test and knowledge test. After obtaining a G1 license, you need to practice and pass the G2 road test. Then, after a year, pass the G road test to get your full G license.

It typically takes about 20 months to progress from a G1 license to a full G license. This includes practicing for at least 12 months with a G1 license, passing the G2 road test, and then waiting a minimum of 12 months to take the G road test.

  • With a G1 license, you cannot drive alone. You must have a fully licensed driver with at least 4 years of experience.
  • With a G2 license, you can drive alone, but there are still some restrictions, such as passenger limits during nighttime driving for drivers under 20.

For the G road test, you will need to bring your G2 license, a valid driver’s license, and a roadworthy vehicle. Ensure your vehicle has proper documentation, such as insurance and license plates
